On Your Own Time: Downtown Scavenger Hunt While shopping, eating or simply enjoying one of the Ice Cream Days’ events in downtown Le Mars, participate in a family-friendly, self-paced scavenger hunt showcasing downtown buildings significant in Le Mars’ history. Pick up the scavenger hunt sheets at the Chamber of Commerce, City Hall, Visitor’s Bureau or Ice Cream Parlor. Return your completed sheets to the Ice Cream Parlor by Sunday evening when all correct sheets will be entered in a prize drawing. The Downtown Scavenger Hunt was created by the Youth on Main Street high school students. On Your Own Time: Historic City Driving Tour Discover Le Mars’ 150- year history through a selfguided driving tour of our community. You will visit locations, buildings, sites, people and events significant to Le Mars. Pick up the guide sheet at the Chamber of Commerce, City Hall, Visitor’s Bureau, Plymouth County Historical Museum or Ice Cream Parlor. The tour is a project of the Le Mars Historic Preservation Commission. Please drive carefully! On your own time: Alley Art Tour the downtown alleys to view murals and paintings. The public art project is coordinated by the Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce Main Street program. Artwork is installed on over 42 buildings in ten alleys. Brochures are available at the Chamber of Commerce, City Hall and the Visitor’s Bureau. Accessible to persons with disabilities. 4:00 p.m. • Polo Match Exhibition sponsored by Steve & Danna Schuster and Greg & Janna Brandt Plymouth County Fairgrounds, 500 4th Avenue NE Polo was a major sport in Le Mars in the 1880s. Spend an afternoon watching and learning how polo is played. The Des Moines Polo Club will play an exhibition match. The game is played by two opposing teams with the objective of scoring goals by hitting a small hard ball with a long-handled wooden mallet through the opposing team’s goal. Bring lawn chairs. 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. • Wise I Karaoke Contest Wise I Brewing Company, 15 2nd Street NE - Ring in the recent opening of Wise I Brewing Company and celebrate Ice Cream Days and the Sesquicentennial with our inaugural Ice Cream Days Karaoke Contest. Warm up your pipes and come belt out your favorite tune at Wise I’s taproom. The contest will have three divisions: 16 & Under, Men, Women. No cost to participate. Sign-up sheet available at Wise I Brewing Company’s taproom up to day of the competition. Judges will determine the finalists and the audience will crown the vocal victor of each division with prizes for each winner. No singing skills required; come and have a blast and sing like no one is listening. Then head across the street to the Olson Cultural Event Center for the Ice Cream Bash! 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. • Fishing Derby Le Mars Municipal Park Pond - Children 12 & under can join the Le Mars Sportsman’s Club for an evening of fishing. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m.; children may fish from 5:30-6:30 p.m., followed by the awarding of prizes. Watch an exhibition game with local celebrities. Tom Melville, from Milwaukee, WI, an expert on cricket, will explain the sport and assist people in playing the game. After the exhibition game, people can try their hand at batting a cricket ball. 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. • Pie Contest Plymouth County Fairgrounds, Sportsman Club in Pioneer Village, 500 4th Avenue NE - Show off your pie baking skills in a pie contest. Entries will be received from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Pies must be a fruit pie and baked in an 8-9 inch (no more than 10 inch) disposable pie pan. Entrants need to be at least years of age, may have assistance from an adult, and at least one person must be a Plymouth County resident. Include recipes on 3”x 5” card.
